OK i know i said there was going to be more i would share on that topic in the last post, but i have some stuff i have to get off my chest. Hopefully you can relate this to your music career too. Basically I wanted to say don’t waste your life, time, and energy living in a box. Many people will tell you that you have to live life in a certain formula or you have to do this this and that for your music career. Do what you know you need to do and go from there. If you have an idea that you think is great and you honestly think it will work, then DO IT. Don’t be mad at them. They have small minds and can’t think outside of the box. If every idea you have, they shoot down, the problem isn’t you. And really it’s not them. They just choose to follow what society says is good or cool or whatever “they” say you should do and shouldn’t do. They use that as a map to live their lives. Not only that but people like that are afraid to live. If you give someone a suggestion that you know will help them and see that what they’re doing to making them go down hill or they are always frustrated and wondering why they’re stuck in their situation, but you do what you told them would help them and i worked, then just know they are afraid to live and try new things. And not only that, they have small minds. I guess I’m just tired of people having small minds and always following a pattern. It’s time to do something new. If you feel you do something different and people talk about you for it, then know that it’s their problem. Cause they have a small mind and can’t think outside of the box. I hope this can help you in your music career, but I also want you to apply this to your everyday life and all aspects of your life. Don’t live in a box and think outside of the box!

You Need More Than Just Music To Survive

someone asked if i would give my music away for free. well really yeah i would because i realize i can make money off of other things outside of music. i mean my music is like im sharing myself with people so yeah i would. people say artist need to eat but im an entrepreneur. i wanna have an umbrella company. so im not just going to make money off of music. artist need to realize there is more than one way to make money. but me myself i wont iilegally download someone else’s music bcuz i know ecspecially with indie artist that’s how they make money. major label artist they get pennies for their music but every penny counts. so thats just my opinion. but new/apiring artist realize you cannot rely on just music to live off of. You need more to live and survive.

Why do you want a record deal?

First of all let me say this. Labels are good for promotion and exposure. The rest you can do yourself. Yes the label has more money then you but you can also save up your money to do what they can do on an independent level. One thing you can do is get your music on indie college radio and also on itunes. To get your music on itunes you can go through cdbaby, which will pay you 91% profit. Which is alot better than a major label that might pay you 25% tops minus their crazy fees and an independent label that might pay you 50% royalty/profit. Also cdbaby is a store so you can sell copies of your album or mixtape on their and not only that they let you set your own price. So that’s great in itself. One thing i dont understand is why some artist are still chasing record deals. They take up most of your money and there is no guarantee that your music will sell. Have you ever noticed that most major artist aren’t selling. Most major artist make only $40,000 for a gold album. An independent artist can sell an album for $8 and sell only 5,000 copies and make what a major label artist makes. Most Artist don’t go platinum. And a lot are lucky to go gold. I’m going to go deeper into the promotion and outlets for major artist in the next blog post, but think about it as a fan of music, where do you get most of you music from? The internet. And most young people find their new music online. Not BET or MTV. Some people tell me that artist go for major deals because you get most of your money off of touring. That’s not always true. And not only that but have you ever noticed if you watch 106 & Park or for the people that still listen to the radio that a new artist will appear and maybe come back with another song or album, but then you never see them again. Just something to think about. I think I’m giving you to much information at one time so I’m going to wait and give you more at the next blog post on monday.

New Rapper’s & Mixtapes

I know a lot of people told you that mixtapes really help you get into the game, but its time for mixtapes to change. It’s time to stop using all of the mainstream rapper’s beats and start using original beats. Start making real music. I;m not saying doing freestyles is bad. If you wanna do that then go ahead, but start doing it on new fresh and original beats. Yes rapping over other people’s beats can get you exposer but that’s really getting old. I know myself Im really getting tired of it. And I know a lot of fans are too. I’m noticing that a lot of people like to hear freestyles (with and without hooks) over actual songs. So if that’s what you like, then like i said do that,but do it on original beats.

Getting A Record Deal

i know a lot of people tell you if you rap or sing then you should try to get a record deal but honestly in my opinion you should stop working on your demo. the reason why is because 9/10 the major labels aren’t even going to look at it unless it was given to them by someone they know like a manager that is well known in the industry or something like that. what labels are looking for is artist with a proven track record. someone that has already sold thousands of records independently. so what you need to do is take your demo and either take it to the streets or the net or start shopping it around to independent labels that you know have a proven track record. this way you can build a fan base before the deal with the major label or if you don’t get a major deal you can take your new music back to your fan base and build your fan base to make it larger than it already is. so instead of wasting your money and time on demos to send to major labels start investing in yourself and sharpen your skills. then take your music to the streets and online. instead of chasing a deal make everybody in your city know who you are and make sure they know your music. make yourself hot in your city so that you have a fan base and you can show the labels when you go for a record deal that you have something to offer. Oh and take advantage of your promotional tools like your brain lol and then internet. use social networks like facebook, myspace, ilike, and whatever else you like. just make sure your music is out there for the world to hear!
